Is the laptop really shutting down, or is Windows crashing and restarting?
The first distinction is important. A true power loss can look like someone pulled the plug: the screen goes black, fans stop and there may be no warning. A Windows stop error can restart the laptop automatically and may briefly show a blue or black error screen. Sleep, hibernate and a lid-close power setting can also be mistaken for a shutdown.
Microsoft explains that unexpected restarts can be caused by hardware, drivers or software. If Windows restarts after a serious error, the stop code and any recorded bugcheck information can help narrow the fault. Do not assume every sudden black screen is a battery problem.

Write down exactly when the fault occurs. Does it happen only when unplugged, only during gaming, only after the laptop becomes hot, or at completely random times? Can it run for hours on the charger but fail quickly on battery? Does it also shut down in the BIOS setup screen?

Can a bad battery make a laptop shut down randomly?
Yes, particularly when the problem happens on battery power. An aged battery may still show a percentage but have reduced capacity or unstable behaviour under load. Microsoft notes that lithium-ion battery capacity decreases with age and use, so battery evidence should include health, full-charge capacity and real runtime rather than percentage alone.
Generate a Windows battery report where the laptop is stable enough to do so, and compare the design capacity with the current full-charge capacity. Dell lists intermittent shutdown or restart among possible symptoms of overheating and identifies blocked vents, dust and clogged fans as common airflow problems. A laptop may also slow itself before it reaches the point of shutting down.
A shutdown that occurs after several minutes of gaming, rendering or other heavy work, then takes longer to happen again after the laptop has cooled, is a useful thermal clue. It is not proof by itself: charger, battery and motherboard faults can also appear under load.

A fan can spin and still fail to cool the laptop properly
Cooling depends on the entire path: intake vents, fan, heatsink fins, heatpipes, heatsink contact and the thermal interface. Dust can form a dense layer at the heatsink where it is not visible from outside. A worn fan may also spin more slowly, stop intermittently or make grinding noises.
If the fan is constantly loud, the laptop is running hot, or the fan has become mechanically noisy, investigate the cooling system before repeatedly stressing the machine.
Use Windows Event Viewer carefully after an unexpected shutdown
After the laptop restarts, Event Viewer can provide useful context. Microsoft documents Event ID 41, Kernel-Power, when Windows detects that the previous shutdown was not clean. However, Event ID 41 is a record of the unexpected shutdown, not a diagnosis of why it happened. Microsoft recommends considering other events such as bugcheck information, updates and user-initiated restart events when investigating the history.

RAM and other hardware instability can look like random shutdowns
Memory faults more often cause crashes, freezes or stop errors than a clean loss of power, but unstable hardware can still make the overall symptom look random. If the laptop freezes before restarting, displays a stop code, or the problem started after a RAM or storage upgrade, include that timing in the diagnosis.
Do not repeatedly reseat or swap internal parts unless you are comfortable with the model and electrostatic precautions. A technician can test memory and other hardware while keeping the power and thermal symptoms in context.
When does a motherboard or power-circuit fault become more likely?

When should you stop using the laptop?
