Laptop Touchpad Not Working in Birmingham? Driver, Battery Swelling or Hardware Fault?

A pointer that will not move does not automatically mean the touchpad needs replacing. The useful distinction is whether Windows has disabled it, the driver cannot communicate with it, or the pad and surrounding case have physically changed.

First separate a frozen laptop from a failed touchpad

Try the keyboard and a wired mouse before blaming the touchpad. If neither responds and the clock or an application is also frozen, the problem may affect the whole computer. Our computer freezing guide covers that wider pattern. If a mouse works normally but the touchpad does not, the investigation becomes more specific.

Also distinguish movement from clicking. A pad that moves the pointer but will not register a click has a different symptom from a device absent from Windows. Write down whether tapping, physical clicking and two-finger scrolling each work. That small checklist is more useful than describing every problem as a broken mouse.

What you notice Check first What it does not prove
Keyboard and mouse also stop responding Whole-system freeze That the touchpad has failed
USB mouse works, touchpad does not Touchpad setting, driver and detection That replacement is necessary
Pointer moves but clicks fail Click settings and physical mechanism That Windows needs reinstalling
Problem began after an update Driver and recent changes That the update damaged hardware
Touchpad rises or case separates Possible battery or physical damage That pressing harder is safe

Check the touchpad switch and Windows settings

Some laptops have a function-key shortcut or other model-specific control that disables the touchpad. Use the symbol on your keyboard and the manufacturer's manual rather than trying random key combinations. On Windows 11, search Settings for Touchpad and check whether it is enabled. Some systems also offer a setting that changes touchpad behaviour while a mouse is connected.

Make one change at a time and test again. A setting that restores the pointer is useful evidence; changing five things together makes it harder to understand what happened. Restart normally after saving work when the laptop remains responsive. Do not force repeated shutdowns just to test an input device.

Microsoft's touchpad troubleshooting guidance identifies drivers as one possible cause. Start with the laptop maker's support page for the exact model and Windows version, or Windows Update. Avoid third-party driver bundles that promise to repair every device at once.

What does a missing touchpad in Device Manager mean?

Device Manager can show whether Windows recognises the input device or reports an error. Depending on the design, entries may appear under pointing devices or Human Interface Devices. A generic entry name is not enough to identify a replaceable part, and not every laptop presents its touchpad in the same way.

An absent device can involve a disabled controller, an unsuitable driver, a connection problem or a hardware fault. It does not establish which one. Note the device name and error before uninstalling anything. On a work-managed laptop, ask the IT administrator before changing drivers or firmware. A technician may need model-specific diagnostics to separate Windows behaviour from the internal connection.

When physical changes matter more than drivers

A touchpad that has become difficult to press, sits higher than before or accompanies a lifted keyboard deserves a physical inspection. Battery placement differs by laptop, so a raised pad is not a diagnosis of swelling by itself. It is a reason to stop treating the problem as software.

If the battery or case appears swollen, stop charging and using the device. Do not press the case flat, puncture the battery or remove a glued-in pack yourself. Dell's swollen-battery guidance explains why a damaged battery needs proper handling. Call before bringing the laptop in so suitable handling can be discussed. A physically distorted computer should not be left charging while you investigate drivers.

Ordinary short battery life is a separate issue. The battery draining quickly guide helps distinguish reduced runtime from physical damage; a healthy-looking battery report does not rule out a physical problem.

Could a cable or the touchpad itself need repair?

A failure after a drop, liquid spill or previous internal work raises different questions from a function key being switched off. The touchpad module, cable, connector and surrounding case may all need checking. A liquid incident should be disclosed even when the laptop appeared to work afterwards.

These are not invitations to open the laptop and reconnect a cable while power is present. Batteries remain connected inside many models even after the charger is removed. Diagnosis should follow the service procedure for that exact machine. If the keyboard is affected too, read our keyboard fault guide, but do not assume both parts have independently failed.

What to record before arranging a repair

Bring the model number and explain when the fault started. Useful details include a recent update, a drop, a spill, new external devices and whether a USB mouse still works. A short video can help when clicking or pointer movement fails intermittently.

The assessment should separate settings and software from mechanical damage before recommending a module, cable or larger palm-rest assembly. On some designs, the part is serviced separately; on others, the repair route is more involved. A quote should identify what will be changed and how the result will be tested, not simply label the whole laptop faulty.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my USB mouse work but not the touchpad?

That narrows the problem towards the built-in input device, its settings, driver or connection. It does not prove the touchpad needs replacing. Check the model's touchpad switch and Windows settings before authorising hardware work.

Can a swollen battery stop the touchpad clicking?

On some laptop designs, swelling can put pressure on the touchpad or palm rest. Stop charging and using a device with visible swelling or distortion and seek handling advice. Do not try to force the pad back down.

Should I reset Windows to fix a touchpad?

Not as a first step. A reset is disruptive and cannot repair a damaged cable, click mechanism or battery. First establish whether Windows recognises the device and whether a setting or supported driver is responsible.
