When is a loud laptop fan normal?
Laptop fans are temperature controlled on most modern systems. When a processor or graphics chip is doing more work, it produces more heat and the fan may accelerate to move more air through the heatsink. ASUS explains that resource-intensive work such as gaming, video editing, conversion and heavy data processing can raise CPU or GPU temperature and therefore fan speed. Short periods of louder fan noise during startup, updates, gaming, video calls, rendering or installation work can therefore be normal. The important question is whether the noise matches the workload and whether it settles when the machine becomes idle.

The fan becomes louder during demanding work, temperatures stay controlled, and the noise settles again afterwards.
Constant high speed
The fan remains loud during simple browsing or while the laptop appears idle. Check background activity, airflow and cooling condition.

Why is the laptop fan running constantly when nothing is open?
A desktop that looks idle is not always idle internally. Windows Update, antivirus scans, cloud sync, browser tabs, indexing, backup software, driver installers and manufacturer utilities can use processor time in the background. ASUS recommends checking CPU and memory use in Task Manager when fan speed seems unexpectedly high.
Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc and look at the Processes tab. Sort by CPU usage and watch it for a few minutes. Do not end unfamiliar Windows processes at random. The goal is to see whether a clear application or update explains the load.

Cleaning is model-specific. Some laptops expose the fan after removing the base cover; others require more disassembly. Do not force the fan to spin at very high speed with an air compressor. High CPU or GPU usage can keep the fan loud
High fan speed may be the cooling system doing its job rather than the cooling system failing. Can old thermal paste make a laptop fan louder?
The fan removes heat only after that heat has travelled from the processor into the heatsink. If heatsink contact is poor, the cooling assembly is disturbed, or the thermal interface has deteriorated, processor temperature can rise quickly and the fan may respond by running harder.
Do not replace thermal paste simply because a laptop is old. First check the model, fan behaviour, airflow and temperature pattern. Some laptops use thermal pads or model-specific compounds around several components, and unnecessary disassembly can create new problems. Thermal service makes sense when diagnosis points to poor heat transfer or when the cooler has already been removed for repair.
Grinding, rattling or clicking sounds are different from normal fan noise
A healthy fan usually produces a smooth rush of air. A worn bearing, damaged blade, loose fan housing or debris touching the rotor can create a grinding, buzzing, rattling or clicking sound. Some manufacturers provide thermal profiles such as quiet, balanced or performance modes. A performance profile may deliberately trade more fan noise for lower temperatures and higher sustained performance.
Use only the manufacturer utility and BIOS intended for the exact laptop model. Do not install random fan-control software or flash an unofficial BIOS just to reduce noise. Forcing a fan to run too slowly can mask the sound while allowing temperatures to rise.
What if the fan is spinning but the laptop still overheats?
A spinning fan does not prove that the cooling system is working efficiently. Airflow can still be blocked at the heatsink fins, the fan may be moving less air than expected, or heat may not be transferring correctly into the heatsink.
