Why does my computer buzz when I play games?

Buzzing, rattling or scraping from a cooling fan

Fans are a common source of changing mechanical noise. Dust, a worn bearing, a loose mount, damaged blades or a cable touching the fan can all create a buzz or rattle. The clue is often that the sound changes as fan speed changes.

High-pitched buzzing and coil whine

Coil whine is an audible vibration from electrical components and is often associated with graphics cards or power delivery. It may become louder under gaming load, change with frame rate and disappear at idle. Coil whine by itself does not prove that the graphics card or PSU is failing.

As a diagnostic clue, you can compare the sound at a normal frame-rate cap with an uncapped menu or game. If the pitch changes immediately with frame rate while the PC remains stable, coil whine becomes more plausible. This is not proof of the source, and there is no need to run an unstable system harder just to reproduce it.

Does buzzing from the power supply mean the PSU is failing?

No. A PSU fan, case vibration or coil whine can all sound as though they come from the power-supply area. What matters is whether the noise is accompanied by shutdowns, restarts, visible heat damage, a burning smell or unstable operation.

Clicking, buzzing or grinding from a hard drive

A mechanical hard drive contains moving parts, so it is different from an SSD. A new repeated click, grind, clunk or failed spin-up combined with inaccessible files deserves caution. If important data exists only on that drive, avoid repeated restarts, benchmarks, CHKDSK or long surface scans until the storage risk is understood.

Can an AIO liquid cooler make a buzzing or humming noise?

Yes. An all-in-one liquid CPU cooler adds a pump as another possible source of humming, buzzing, rattling or gurgling. Some liquid movement can be normal, especially after a computer has been moved, but persistent abnormal pump noise combined with rapidly rising CPU temperature needs investigation.

  • Changes with frame rate or GPU load: coil whine or GPU cooling becomes more plausible.
