Maintenance and fault repair are different jobs
Preventive maintenance looks for developing risks on a computer that still works: blocked filters, failing storage indicators, missing backups, unsupported software, low free space, noisy fans or damaged cables. Storage health, available capacity, memory stability, temperatures and event history are more useful than a generic claim that the machine has been “checked”. Use manufacturer diagnostics and model-appropriate tools where available.
SMART or vendor storage information can support a diagnosis, but it does not guarantee future reliability. A passing short memory test may not reproduce an intermittent issue. Temperature readings need a known workload and room conditions.
Record enough evidence to explain why an SSD, RAM, fan, battery or other part is being proposed. An old component is not automatically a failed component, and a newer replacement is not automatically good value for the owner’s use.
Windows maintenance should be conservative and transparent
- Check Windows activation, version and support status.
- Review Windows Update and manufacturer driver/firmware tools.
- Confirm that security protection is active and not duplicated by conflicting antivirus products.

- Check available disk space and unusually large temporary data.

Security maintenance must reflect current support
Install supported security and operating-system updates, review browser extensions, remove confirmed unwanted software and verify that backups are not exposed to the same account or device risk.
Windows 10 reached the end of free support on 14 October 2025. A Windows 10 computer may still operate, but ordinary maintenance cannot restore the missing standard security-update lifecycle. The choices can include Windows 11 where eligible, Extended Security Updates where suitable, another supported operating system, or replacement.
For a business PC, maintenance may also need account permissions, multi-factor authentication, data protection, software licensing and recovery procedures. Those are not replaced by a one-off malware scan.
