Is the problem the router, internet connection or computer?
Use comparison tests rather than guessing:
- Check another device on the same Wi-Fi. If multiple devices fail together, investigate the router or internet service first.
- Try the affected computer on another trusted network. A phone hotspot can be useful for a short comparison test if your mobile plan allows it.
- Try Ethernet where practical. If wired networking is stable while Wi-Fi drops, that narrows the fault to the wireless path rather than the whole internet connection.
- Note the distance from the router. A connection that only fails in one room may be coverage or interference rather than a damaged laptop.
- Record whether the Wi-Fi icon disappears or simply shows No Internet. Those are different clues.

Safe Windows checks to try first
- Run the Network and Internet troubleshooter. On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the automated troubleshooter in Get Help.
- Forget and reconnect to the network. This refreshes the saved Wi-Fi profile without changing the router.
- Restart the router and modem. Do this only if you control the network and understand that every connected device will briefly lose service.
- Try the other Wi-Fi band. If the router exposes separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, comparing them can reveal coverage or compatibility issues.
- Install Windows updates and the correct manufacturer network driver. Use the PC or adapter manufacturer's support page rather than random driver-download sites.
Microsoft also documents network commands such as netsh winsock reset, TCP/IP reset and DNS cache flushing. These can help with Windows networking state, but they should follow the simpler comparisons above rather than replacing them.
When should you reinstall the Wi-Fi driver?
If the connection stopped working after a driver or Windows change, or Device Manager reports an adapter problem, the wireless driver becomes more relevant. Microsoft advises downloading a backup driver from the PC manufacturer's site before uninstalling the current adapter driver, especially if the affected PC cannot get online afterward.
After restart, Windows may reinstall the adapter automatically. If it does not, use the saved manufacturer driver. Avoid installing a generic driver simply because it has a newer version number; laptop vendors sometimes customise wireless packages for their hardware.
If the adapter repeatedly disappears from Device Manager, requires physical movement to return or is not detected even with the correct driver, hardware inspection becomes more important.
Can power-saving settings cause Wi-Fi dropouts?

Use Network reset as a later step, not the first
Microsoft describes Network reset as a last-step option. It removes installed network adapters, reinstalls them after restart and returns networking settings to defaults. That can also affect VPN clients, virtual switches and saved network configuration.
Before using it on a work PC, make sure you know any VPN or specialist networking settings that may need to be restored. For business systems, it may be safer to document the configuration first.
