Windows 10 support guide

Windows 10 Support Has Ended: Upgrade to Windows 11, Use ESU or Replace the PC?

Windows 10 still starts after end of support, but Microsoft stopped normal free security updates and technical support on 14 October 2025. The right next step is to check Windows 11 eligibility first, then compare a supported upgrade, Windows 10 Extended Security Updates or replacing the machine.

Checking processor, TPM, Secure Boot and overall hardware condition helps determine whether a Windows 10 PC can move to Windows 11 or needs another route.

What does Windows 10 end of support actually mean?

Microsoft says Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. The operating system continues to run, but the normal support lifecycle no longer includes free Windows Update security fixes or Microsoft technical assistance.

This matters more for a computer that stays online, handles email, online banking, customer data or business files. The correct response is not panic; it is to move the machine onto a supported security path and make a decision based on its actual hardware and value.

How to check whether your Windows 10 PC can run Windows 11

Use Microsoft's own tools before relying on a generic compatibility list:

  1. Run PC Health Check. Microsoft says the app provides a Windows 11 eligibility check and identifies why a device does or does not meet requirements.
  2. Check Windows Update. Eligible Windows 10 devices can also be assessed from Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  3. Record the exact failed requirement. There is a big difference between TPM 2.0 being disabled in firmware and the processor itself not being supported.
  4. Check the manufacturer model and BIOS information. Some systems need firmware updates or the correct UEFI settings before eligibility is reported accurately.

If you changed motherboard or firmware settings recently, Microsoft notes that Windows' eligibility assessment can take time to refresh. Recheck with PC Health Check after the hardware state is correct.

What hardware does Windows 11 require?

Microsoft's minimum requirements include a compatible 64-bit processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, at least 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and an HD display meeting the minimum size/resolution criteria.

CheckWhat it tells youDo not assume
PC Health Check passesMicrosoft considers the device eligibleThat every application or peripheral is compatible
TPM 2.0 not detectedTPM may be absent or disabledThat the whole PC must be replaced immediately
Secure Boot requirement failsFirmware/boot mode needs checkingThat switching settings blindly is safe
Unsupported processorOfficial Windows 11 support may not be availableThat a RAM or SSD upgrade fixes CPU eligibility
Storage too small/fullCapacity/free space needs addressingThat storage is the only failed requirement

Changing BIOS/UEFI settings without understanding the existing boot configuration can make Windows unbootable. If BitLocker or device encryption is enabled, make sure the recovery key is available before firmware changes.

TPM and Secure Boot: disabled is not the same as unsupported

Some compatible PCs have TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot capability present but not configured as Windows expects. That can sometimes be corrected in firmware, but the exact setting names vary by motherboard and manufacturer.

Do not copy random BIOS instructions from another model. Use the exact PC or motherboard manual. If the machine currently boots in Legacy/CSM mode, changing to UEFI without checking the disk and boot configuration first can stop Windows loading. The goal is a supported, stable configuration, not simply making PC Health Check turn green.

What if the computer is not officially eligible for Windows 11?

There are three sensible questions:

  1. Is the failure only a configurable requirement? Check firmware and Microsoft eligibility evidence first.
  2. Can the machine remain on a supported Windows 10 security path temporarily? Microsoft's Consumer ESU programme may provide extra time.
  3. Is the hardware old enough that replacement is better value? Consider reliability, storage, RAM, battery condition, repair history and what you actually use the PC for.

Microsoft advises against installing Windows 11 on hardware that does not meet the minimum requirements because compatibility and support are not guaranteed. For a repair-business recommendation, we would rather explain the supported options than create a machine that may become harder to maintain.

What is Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU)?

Microsoft's Windows 10 Consumer ESU programme is a temporary security bridge for eligible Windows 10 version 22H2 devices after normal support ended. Microsoft currently says ESU can provide critical and important security updates through 12 October 2027.

ESU is not a new version of Windows 10. Microsoft states that it does not provide feature improvements or normal technical support. It buys time to plan a supported transition rather than turning an old PC into a long-term platform.

Because programme terms can change, use Microsoft's current ESU page when deciding whether to enrol rather than relying on an older blog post or screenshot.

Back up before a Windows 11 upgrade

Microsoft says the normal upgrade experience moves files and data into Windows 11, but it still recommends backing up before installing a new Windows version. That is the right approach: an upgrade should never be your only copy of important data.

Check the health of the storage drive first if the PC is freezing, reporting SMART errors or making hard-drive noises. Our hard drive and SSD failure guide explains when data protection should take priority over an operating-system upgrade.

Business PCs need a planned transition

For a business, the decision is not only whether Windows 10 still launches. Consider security policy, supported applications, backups, Microsoft 365 requirements, encryption recovery keys and replacement timing across all devices.

Microsoft notes that Microsoft 365 Apps support on Windows 10 ended with Windows 10 support, although Microsoft continues security updates for Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 for a period after end of support. Businesses should plan around the current Microsoft lifecycle rather than assume an old configuration remains fully supported.

Frequently asked questions

Does Windows 10 stop working after end of support?

No. Microsoft says Windows 10 computers continue to function after 14 October 2025, but normal free software updates, security fixes and Microsoft technical support are no longer provided.

How can I check whether my PC can run Windows 11?

Use Microsoft PC Health Check or Windows Update. PC Health Check identifies whether the device meets Windows 11 requirements and can explain which requirement is not met.

What if my PC cannot officially run Windows 11?

Microsoft currently lists Windows 10 Consumer Extended Security Updates as a temporary option through 12 October 2027, or you can replace the device with supported Windows 11 hardware. Compare the value and condition of the existing PC first.

Should I bypass Windows 11 hardware requirements?

Microsoft recommends against installing Windows 11 on devices that do not meet the minimum requirements because compatibility and support are not guaranteed. A supported route is preferable for a repair-business recommendation.

Will upgrading to Windows 11 delete my files?

Microsoft states that the default upgrade experience moves files and data into the Windows 11 installation, but it still recommends backing up before installing a new Windows version.

Can PC Repair Guru check Windows 11 compatibility in Birmingham?

Yes. We can check the machine model, hardware, firmware state and Microsoft eligibility result, then explain whether an upgrade or replacement is the more practical route.
